cows. There are miniature cows on this farm. No, really. When you pull up, make sure you pull the gate shut behind you so that you don’t let the animals out. They peeked out at us from behind tall grass and cacti and watched as we drove our van down the pebble road where we met our hosts. \r\n\r\nRyan and his partner are currently living on the property in their van and are in the process of making their dream come true. So far they’ve put up a barn-like structure with a shower out back and as well as a composting toilet. There’s also little triangular chicken coop houses on the property and a big ol’ pen of goats!\r\n\r\nOur hosts showed us to their favorite campsite just a short walk from the main area of the farm but far enough that you had ample privacy. It’s a level spot with a bunch of mesquite in the background that makes it seem wild and plenty of firewood for you to have a really nice evening solo or among friends. We also liked the idea of camping right next to the small pond they had on the property. \r\n\r\nFor those of you traveling in a van, there's several good and level places for you to park as well. It was in the high 90’s all weekend, but we would not have changed a single thing about our experience. \r\n\r\nMy boyfriend and I brought our tent and (per hosts suggestion) chose a wonderful spot tucked away with a great view. Our spot was a great balance between shade and sun - enough openings to see the stars at night but enough shade to keep us from frying. We felt like we had the entire land to ourselves (which I have never experienced at any State Park). The land is also very well maintained, and our host mowed a fresh path for us to our campsite. \r\n\r\nThe most hilarious and friendly pigs, goats and cows roamed the land, and these animals could not have been more curious and well behaved. The animals gave us our space, but let us interact with them when desired. One night we were able to feed the cows and goats some treats, which was a fun surprise. \r\n\r\nThere was a burn ban in place during our stay, but thankfully our hosts had a charcoal grill that we were able to use to do all of our cooking. \r\n\r\nWe used the outdoor shower available (which was a lifesaver given the heat!). As soon as we arrived he cut the branches of the mesquite trees so they wouldn't scratch my husband's truck. We were greeted by Athena, the Meramma x Great Pyranese mix. She was the sweetest and would guard us while we were at camp. The compost toilet did have a wasp nest, but as soon as we let Ryan know he immediately sprayed and all was good! The tour of the property was amazing. We got to let all the animals and I even got to hold a baby goat!!
