Simply communicating with Ken made me excited to be welcomed on to the property. After getting a little lost (follow his directions, not Google Maps!), I winded through gravel/dirt roads that curved through families of trees, exposing glimpses of Antelope Mountain and the intimacy of a protected land. I arrived to find Ken working on the location near his latest cabin project that welcomes his daughters and grandchildren when they visit. The camp spots are down a trail that hugs the full flowing creek. He's built a platform for one location which conveniently provides a flat spot from which to cook breakfast and enjoy the sounds of relaxation. Ken sold 10 of his 25 acres several years ago (he's owned the property since the early 70s!) and after witnessing the abuse of the land by two owners, he purchased it back with the intention to protect and restore. All of the structures on the property- three cabins and a community yurt- Ken built. As with any project, Ken's constantly devising ways to improve and create a place where he can educate and welcome visitors to truly appreciate the land. He welcomes an exchange of services should folks wish to help him with the structures or the garden. He has chickens and the occasional WWOOFer to help him tend to the expansive garden. Be ready to hike down to your campsite, about a quarter to a half mile away. You'll want to lounge in any of the countless hammocks or hike any of the trails Ken's created. Ken also happens to run Bountiful Houseboat Charter on the Pend Oreille Lake if you're up for a swim/fishing/cruising. Schweitzer Mountain is nearby if you're there during the right season and eager to ride- Ken worked (and snowboarded) on the mountain for years. First of all, Ken is an awesome host. He is new to hipcamp, but if you find him on airbnb, you'll see that he is \"super host.\" Despite our troubles with getting into town at a decent hour, Ken was understanding and adaptable, and he made sure our stay was enjoyable. He invited us into his home for coffee in the morning, where we had great conversation and learned about his adventures and experiences with hosting travelers. Then, we explored his property, which he has taken the time to make accessible with dirt trails and a bridge that leads you to the other side of the creek. Lastly, we topped off our experience by touring the garden and build projects before swinging on an awesome rope swing that extends over a big gully. Needless to say, it was a blast. We would highly recommend staying with Ken if you're looking for a unique, personal camping adventure. There was a nice fire pit, table, hammocking trees, as well as an ax and plenty of wood for your chopping delight. \r\n\r\nKen has plenty of property to explore from a wonderful organic garden to trails through the national forest.
